OK, I've seen every episode of the Monk series on TV at least twice and I wish they would rerun the series again. And then came the books. I've now read every one of them and what I most liked about them after watching the series is the way Mr. Goldberg (through Natalie) describes Monk and all his quirks as the story line unfolds. After watching the TV series it makes it so easy to visualize every move, every scene and even the facial expressions of the players envolved. Based on these writings the TV series should have continued. Such good adventures and so many surprise changes in the whole dynamic. Kudos!

Mr Monk Goes to Germany Lee Goldberg 9780451220998 Books Reviews

Which is funnier -- Monk with OCD or Monk on a drug that "relieves him of his fears and phobias, but also limits his detective skills"? (That's from Wikipedia "List of fictional medicines and drugs". You didn't know that there was such a list?) Both "Monks" are fun, but the unaltered one is funnier, because his crazy logic isn't so crazy when you think about it. Of course you shouldn't think about it, because then you might become like Monk ... So just let yourself laugh every few pages as Monk solves the "easy" crimes immediately, and keeps his friends awake at all hours helping him with the more difficult cases. Enjoy Monk's commentary on compulsions, patterns, order, therapy, flying, and travel in general. Psychiatrists, whether you're druggers or talkers, watch out, because there's no escaping Monk when he needs you!
Mr. Monk Goes to Germany

The latest book in Lee Goldberg's Mr. Monk Series is well-paced and exciting. The chapters speed by as though you are watching a good movie.
Monk is coping fairly well when Dr. Kroger announces that he is going to Germany for a weeklong conference. Within 24 hours Monk has turned into an emotional wreck fraught with abandonment issues. He is convinced that Dr. Kroger cares deeply about him and won't be annoyed about being followed overseas. He pays Natalie's way for her and with a bit of chemical help "The Monk" flies to Germany with his assistant.
The book is full of comedic moments as Natalie navigates their way to the village where the tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs originated. Picture Monk staying in a centuries old house built without any right angles! There is just enough description of the charming setting around Lohr, local customs, and people to make the book interesting, but it never becomes the focal point.
Naturally there is no such thing as a quiet vacation (including routine appointments with a less than pleased Dr. Kroger at the conference center) when Monk is around. The bodies start to show up almost immediately which puts the village's tiny police department into a tailspin. Again the writing is clever as we meet Commissioner Stoffmacher and Lt. Geshir who just happen to have a Skipper/Gilligan relationship like Stottlemeyer and Disher back home!
Monk spots a six-fingered man in the village, and immediately the detecting becomes very personal for him. Although the man is an upstanding citizen Monk is determined to find criminal evidence against him and works relentlessly to this end. There are many twists and turns to the plot as Monk with Natalie at his side digs for the truth. Natalie's voice as the narrator is funny and full of insight. She provides the normalcy that counterbalances all of Monk's unique perceptions. There are some unexpectedly dramatic scenes with Dr. Kroger. At this point the book is moving on fast forward with the reader along for a wild ride. Everything resolves itself in the end of course as Monk ingeniously solves the mystery. For me the book was over too soon!
In this sixth installment in Lee Goldberg's series of TV tie-ins, Adrian Monk and his assistant Natalie Teeger travel to Lohr, Germany (home of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) in pursuit of Monk's vacationing psychiatrist, Dr. Kroger. Naturally, while they're stalking Kroger, Monk and Natalie encounter a corpse or two, as well as the German equivalents of Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Disher. Monk also has a run-in with someone potentially more significant, the man who, Monk suspects, was responsible for his wife Trudy's death--the one murder he's never been able to solve.

Mr. Monk Goes to Germany is an unusually appealing addition to Goldberg's delightful series. In part this is because it advances the story of Monk's hunt for Trudy's killer. Mostly, though, it's because it's riddled with politically incorrect humor about people with physical abnormalities--the web-footed and six-fingered and fur-covered among us. For Monk, the trouble starts at home, when a one-legged man moves in upstairs. The poor man's suffering--he was compelled in the wild to saw off his own leg and eat it--is as nothing compared to Monk's horror at the man's asymmetry and the disquieting propinquity of a cannibal.

"'He's up there,' he said. 'I can hear him hopping around on one foot.'

'Good,' I said. 'You should feel securing knowing exactly where he is.'

'It's the incessant beat of imminent death,' Monk said. 'Hop. Hop. Hop.'

'I'm sure it's not that bad,' I said.

'Hop. Hop. Hop.'

'Try earplugs,' I said. 'Or cotton balls.'

'Hop. Hop. Hop.'

'Put a pillow over your head,' I said.

'Hop. Hop. Hop.'

'I get the point, Mr. Monk. I'm sure he'll sit down soon for dinner.'

'That's what I'm afraid of,' Monk said."

Great stuff. I'm very much looking forward to the next Mr. Monk novel.
